Making Clean Water with a Spark of Electricity | Korneel Rabaey | TEDxBrussels

Wednesday, June 8, 2016 - 13:19

Electrify the world! You may spontaneously think about electric cars, however electricity can do so much more. We can use it to feed bacteria that convert carbon dioxide from a chimney to valuable products. We can replace nasty chemicals used to combat sewer corrosion in your own neighborhood, recover chemicals considered lost in wastewater and create safe water in Indian slums. As electricity increasingly finds sustainable sources, we should take this as an opportunity to create a greener chemical and water sector.

Caravel 2016

Thursday, April 21, 2016 - 12:47

In the context of WATER.WAR and in collaboration with the scientists of LabMET, Faculty of Bio-Engineering at the University of Ghent, Ivan Henriques developed a floating mobile robotic structure which harvests and stores it’s energy from Microbial Fuel Cells. Microbial Fuel Cells, or MFC’s, are devices that use bacteria in waste water as the catalyst to oxidise organic matter and generate electricity. The energy harvested from the MFC’s is applied to move the robotic structure and at the same time to clean the polluted environment with the help of water-purifying plants integrated in the structure. The development of this prototype is part of the evolution of bio-machines previously built by artist Ivan Henriques, which are hybrid forms between living organisms and machines creating an evolutionary vector between machines and nature.

Commissioned by Gluon, Budafabriek, Mondriaan Fonds and Stimulerings Fonds. Developed in collaboration with: UGhent-LabMET – Prof. Dr. Ir. Korneel Rabaey, Way Cern Khor, Xu Zhang, Dr. Ramon Ganigué & Dr. Jan B. A. Arends, UGhent-R2T, Prof. Leydervan Xavier (Mechanical Engineering Lab CEFET-RJ) and soft/hardware developer Andjela Tomic.
